Axiom Verge 2 postponed to 2021, the creator details some new gameplay features

The announcement had certainly delighted fans of retro Metroidvania that we know many among you: last December, game designer Thomas Happ announced the arrival of a numbered sequel to Axiom Verge, immediately dated for this autumn.

The announcement seemed to arise from the most elementary evidence, since the fateful date, even nebulous, approached step by step. The sentence therefore fell like a cleaver (see a crowned head) , and it is through a post full of humor that the creative gives us an appointment next year , not without citing a well-known planning law. : “It always takes more time than expected, even taking into account Hofstadter’s law”.

2020 continues to make its own. Predicting the future has never been more difficult than this year. In 2019, I unveiled the first (and unique to date) Axiom Verge 2 trailer by announcing its release IN FALL, all in all caps. Despite my best efforts, I will not succeed. I apologize to Axiom Verge fans who were hoping to learn more about his world. For those who don’t want to read my entire post, I’ll try another prediction, and announce a release for the first half of 2021.

Happ then explains why the Axiom Verge 2 project requires him more time than expected: with enemies now smarter, he must in particular work on the AI and its path. If the famous Address Disruptor, the weapon that allowed to glitch environments will not be back as is, we must however expect to find a relatively similar mechanics.

Finally, Happ calls into question the artistic direction of this sequel, which abandons the closed rooms inspired by the first episodes of the Metroid series for a more open exploration , on dry land, which obviously changes the situation, and requires a completely different type of scrolling, as this microscopic extract illustrates:

We will therefore have to take our troubles patiently, let time do its work, and hope that Axiom Verge 2, planned for Switch, arrives at the beginning of the year 2021.
